The Deepfake Dilemma: Fake Reality | Trending MBA GD Topic

In 2024, Technology can be said to be one of the greatest human innovations. Everything from Smartphones to mobile applications is Technology that has made our lives easier and simpler. With this ever-evolving Technology, almost everything is possible. But what if someone misuses this Technology for illegal activities? Yes, it happens. And the emerging deep fakes are the best example of it. Negative uses of deep fake raise the deepfake dilemma of whether to use this advanced tech or not.

Most celebrities, like Rashmika Mandana and Deepika Padukone, have become victims of these Deepfakes on social media. The biggest threat in our rapidly changing digital age is more deepfakes, which threaten personal identification, privacy, and individuality. No matter how big a revolution it will become in modern Technology, it is becoming controversial over privacy violations.

What is Deepfake Technology?

Deepfake is a part of AI, i.e., Artificial Intelligence that creates fake videos or pictures using an individual’s personality. This Deepfake Technology is also known as “Deep forgery” in some aspects.

You must have seen the fake video of David Beckham, the soccer player, speaking nine languages well when he only speaks one. Apart from that, Deepfake technology has also been used to create explicit photos of global celebrity Taylor Swift.

Like Photoshopping, deepfakes generate realistic-looking but completely fake photos or videos using the latest Technologies. Apart from Fake Photos, this Technology has also been used to module audio clips and mimic the same personality shown in photos or Videos.

How is Deepfake Technology Becoming a National Concern?

Here are some points that will help you better understand the significant drawbacks of this Deepfake Dilemma-

Cons of Deep Fake Technology

Threat to Security

No matter how friendly we are with biometrics and face recognition, Deepkafake is different from all of these. This AI technology doesn’t require our prior permission before using our images or videos.

This will become a threat as it can create a fake personality of ourselves over social media and other digital platforms. It can also become a risk factor for national security and integrity.

Dilemma Between Real Or Fake Identity

The second most dangerous risk of Deepfake technology is that it is advanced Technology. It can steal someone’s real identity, leading to severe privacy and identity theft. For example, while using Deepfake technology, a person can easily forge documents like a passport or license. It can also create fake accounts or withdraw funds.

Spreading Misleading Information via Politicians

Deepfake Technology can lead to news fabrication and misleading information through celebrities. Recently, the IT Minister of India, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, called it a ”threat to democracy.” Along with him, PM Modi also expressed concern over the dangerous results of Deepfake Videos.

In this case, the government should take the necessary steps to educate people about such technologies. The IT minister should also invest in AI-detecting apps that can harm the public.

Pros of Deep Fake

As a famous saying goes, “There are always two different sides of the same coin”. Apart from all the controversy, Deepfake technology also has some positive side. In some aspects, it is believed that Deepfake Technology can create immense opportunities in Entertainment, Filmmaking, and other Video Production Activities.  Here are some points in favor of Deepfake’s dilemma –

  1. Deepfake technology can be used to create visual effects for the entertainment industry. It allows the creative filmmaker to use their visualization power to create something special.
  2. Advertisement industry can take good advantage of this tech. Recently, Zomato and Cadbury utilized this potential to create personalized ads. Zomato made a break with Chirs Gayle and Ranveer Singh for IPL and used that single ad for all teams with deepfake tech.
  3. Deepfake technology can facilitate research in various fields, including computer vision, machine learning, and human-computer interaction.
  4. Deepfakes can be used in educational settings to create realistic simulations and interactive learning materials. For example, they can be used to recreate historical figures delivering speeches or to simulate real-world scenarios for training purposes in fields like healthcare, law enforcement, and military training.

Wrapping Up-

In today’s article, we have discussed some crucial information regarding the dilemma of Deepfake technology. So, considering the overall threats of this Technology, the Ministry of IT department has taken some crucial steps.

The country is now prepared to tackle the threat created by deepfake Technology. The man behind this exclusive plan is none other than Mr Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology.

In November 2023, a conference was conducted with representatives of AI businesses, social media platforms, and industry experts. After this meeting, the government accepted deep fakes as a serious risk to democracy. This full-fledged plan includes four major steps: detection, prevention, tracking reports and enhancing public awareness.

As we mentioned, several initiatives have already been implemented; the other one will follow shortly. But the deep fake is still a threat to us and we have to make sure to protect our privacy. People can use the tech in both ways and we have to secure our information so no one can use it.
