We are looking at an intense transformation in the nature of employment across the globe. Many jobs are on the brink of being altered and switched due to the oncoming of new technologies.  One such outperforming technology in this very day is Artificial Intelligence or what is popularly called AI. AI is a part of automation and the latest buzzword in the technological advances that humanity has made. The goal of this technology or rather any technology is to imitate humans and their intelligence. It sounds more like a threat to many forms of employment. But true AI or automation technologies are still far not achievable within our lifetimes and are nascent at this point. The impact of technology on jobs is affected employment in both ways positively and Negatively.

According to some it will open new ways of work and create more jobs. On the other hand, people argue that it will eliminate the human need for jobs. There is a rampant turnover when it comes to automation and technologies today. While we are emerging from the pandemic, many trends have already disrupted many industries imbibing the new normal and there is going to be an enormous impact on all sorts of employment. In fact, these modern technologies and AI may lead to the loss of many unskilled jobs but it also gives rise to more novel job opportunities setting higher standards of productivity.  

Here are some arguments in view of both sides of the thought.

Views In Favour Of Positive Impact Of Technology and AI

1. Although automation may replace a few kinds of jobs, historically the new technologies have also led way to the net creation of jobs. AI and new technologies will not be the job displacers in the coming years; they will rather revolutionize the nature of jobs that people do.

2. Humans have always adapted to these changes, took the benefits of new applications, and invented entirely new types of work. Some jobs may be handed over to AI and robotics but more will be generated in curative and creative activities and the demand for such jobs will rise greatly. Technology disrupts jobs, but at the same time creates more jobs.

When the population of the world was a few hundred million, there were about hundreds of million jobs, still, many people remained unemployed. When the population graduated to a few billion people, there still were billions of jobs, so there is going to be no shortage of things that need to be done.

3. Technology liberates us from arduous daily tasks to develop and define a new relationship with our work. That may be more constructive and socially beneficial. Automation and Technology have always increased productivity and also impact the employee’s productivity in their jobs. It increases personal as well as professional productivity, therefore the impact of AI and automated technologies will remain the same in the future too. Because someone will have to work towards building new tools and technologies, there will be a new wave of innovations and jobs.

4. Many jobs need uniquely human capabilities like critical thinking, creativity, empathy, etc.; and jobs of this kind would never die down to automation technologies. For all automation and AI, humans still need to be involved on a large scale. A human’s ability to sense and react in an unexpected circumstance and to override an automated system will always be required, just like how an aircraft requires pilots and co-pilots.

AI and technologies offload repetitive tasks so that humans can invest their attention and energy in places where a difference can be made. Technology can remind us to call a loved one, dial their number and even send flowers, but cannot emotionally connect with them. So there is always going to be a great difference between what AI and a human does.

5. For a few years to come, AI and robotics will remain for more applications in banking, retailing, and transport. Since there will be risks of error attribution of liability, it cannot penetrate into the ordinary landscapes easily.6. Our social, legal, and regulatory structures will have more concerns to be addressed minimizing the impact on employment. Significant technical and policy issues remain to be resolved. So, if the technical advances are reliable and are positive, human energies can be diverted in resolving such concerns.

Views In Favour Of AI and Technologies Shrinking the Jobs Than They Create

  1. Automation impacted mostly blue-collar jobs so far; but the upcoming, AI-led wave of innovation hovers over the white-collar jobs too. Displacement is already happening and is believed to get much worst in the future. People today may be trying to pick a career path that is most likely to get automated, leaving them with no choice losing the race between automation and human work.
  2. A few experts also believe that a few highly-skilled workers may succeed exceedingly in new environments. But it may be replaced into lesser-paying service industry jobs and permanent unemployment. The safest zones can be services as they require human effort. Everything that can be automated is being replaced. Law offices are replacing clerks with computers, IBM Watson is replacing researchers, and so on. Therefore, many jobs may not be likely to exist.
  3. The education system today is not able to prepare the workforce for the work of the future. This would mean that the existing political and economic institutions may not be competent enough to handle such hard choices.
  4. And the current wave of automation may have a stronger and faster effect than the earlier ones. It is giving people lesser time to retrain. AI could completely replace skilled work widening the income gap with those jobs that cannot be automated. There is going to be a world that does not require any labor and just a few minorities would be needed to guide the bots.
  5. Looking at how a few experts think, there can be a substantial impact on white-collar jobs because of technology and AI. Especially in the back-office of clinics, law firms, transcriptionists, etc. The governments need to collaborate with technology companies and educational institutes. This helps with massive retraining efforts to prevent social disruptions that may happen at scale.

The concept of work is set to change drastically in the coming years which will let people re-negotiate the social environment around employment. Even when there are going to be fewer jobs, there will be a healthy labor and leisure time balance. The workweek may fall to lesser hours, which is good. Robots will assist humans, letting them use intelligence in new ways.

In the end, nothing is etched in stone. The political, social, and economic systems will determine and can make sure that the coming wave of technological change falls positively on jobs and employment. There is some impact of technology on jobs. But, if people update themselves with innovation they can survive without any problem. Because of AI Many industries will be innovated and new potential to create many new sectors will appear leading to the creation of another set of jobs. Conventional work will decrease and the same number of jobs will be there. Automation and new technologies are not new to the world and this is what the human race has seen for the last 300 years. So if people improve themselves according to the technology there will be no impact of technology on jobs.
