IIM Waitlist Movement: Meaning & Past Trends (Updated for IIM Admissions 2027)

Every year, roughly 2.50 – 3 lakh aspirants appear for CAT to get into the PGDM/PGP/MBA programmes of the 22 IIMs in India. For IIM admissions 2027 (batch 2027-29), CAT 2026 will be held on 29 November 2026, and registrations stand at about 2.84 lakh (around 3.7% lower than last year). Against this, the total number of seats across all IIMs is only about 8,284 (expected, based on past intake trends), so most aspirants cannot make it in the first round.

For the IIM waitlist movement, a decisive moment in the admissions journey has begun. To the majority of the aspiring candidates, it's more than just a wait; it's a second chance at making it to the top Indian MBA colleges such as IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, and the like. With thousands of aspirants targeting limited seats, an appreciation of such waitlist trends only provides clarity, strategy, and most importantly-hope.

For the year 2026, with many opting for online CAT coaching under expert guidance, applying to multiple IIMs has made waitlist conversions all the more important. Let us decode how this movement works, what it signifies, and what it means for you.

What is IIM selection process?

For getting into IIMs students need to pass through a rigorous selection and filtration process. Generally it is into three phases.

1. CAT
2. Shortlisting on CAT score, academics and profile
3. PI (Personal Interview); IIM Ahmedabad also conducts an Analytical Writing Test (AWT)
4. Final composite score and offers

Most IIMs have dropped the Group Discussion round and now rely on Personal Interviews (and WAT/AWT at some IIMs). On the basis of CAT scores and the minimum overall and sectional percentile cut-offs, candidates are shortlisted for the next stage.

There is no officially consolidated list regarding waitlist numbers in IIMs. The following figures have been gathered from RTI responses on educational portals and are the latest numbers per category as available (2025-27 batch). For the 2026-28 batch where the waitlist movement took place in May-July 2026, the data had not yet come out through RTIs at that time. Some IIMs (like IIM Mumbai, IIM Nagpur, IIM Kashipur and IIM Bodh Gaya among others) too had been late in declaring results/waitlists in 2026.

What is the IIM Waitlist Movement?

Once the initial merit lists are released, selected candidates are given a deadline to accept or reject their admission offers. But not everyone accepts — some go for global B-schools, others prefer private Indian colleges with niche specializations, and some simply drop out due to personal reasons.

This process of reallocating seats is known as waitlist movement, and it can be the make-or-break moment for many aspirants. From the modest movement at IIM Ahmedabad to the very large movement at IIM Kozhikode and IIM Indore, the trend varies greatly, and every year brings surprises.

IIM Seats 2027 (Expected) and Shortlist Size

Total expected seats across 22 IIMs are about 8,284. Of these, the six BLACKI IIMs (Bangalore, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Kozhikode, Indore) account for around 2,922 seats. These are trend-based estimates; final intake is confirmed in each IIM's 2027-29 admission policy.

Reservation (Government of India norms): General (unreserved) about 40.5%, EWS 10%, NC-OBC 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, and PwD 5% (horizontal). So the General category gets roughly 3,350 of the 8,284 seats. Waitlists are maintained category-wise.

How big is a shortlist?

This depends highly on the college and the year. According to the RTI data of IIM Ahmedabad's last cycle, around 1330 candidates have been short-listed for the AWT-PI interview round against 509 offers made. This is approximately 2.5 to 3 times the number of offers. It is not 10 times as is widely believed. Many IIMs have much higher numbers than that.

Shortlisting for CAP is done by the coordinating IIM in consultation with the participating IIMs.

IIM Ahmedabad (IIMA) Shortlist: Criteria and Highlights

IIM Ahmedabad announces PI/AWT shortlist for PGP and PGP-FABM simultaneously, typically about two weeks after the CAT result announcement. In the previous admission cycle, the shortlist came out on 8 January 2026 and the 2027 shortlist will come out in the 2nd week of January 2027. Applicants who have made it to the shortlist verify that on the IIMA admissions website using their CAT registration number and email ID.

Change for 2027-29 Admission Cycle

1. The shortlisting criteria will be the CAT 2026 overall percentile (and not the normalised CAT score) for IIM Ahmedabad in 2027-29 admission cycle.
2. Shortlisting Composite Score: 65% CAT Percentile + 35% normalised Application Rating (AR) score. The AR score is composed of academics, work experience and diversity with discipline-wise normalisation.
3. Selection weights: PI = 50%; Normalised Composite Score = 40%; AWT = 10%
4. The minimum CAT cut-offs for the 2027-29 admission cycle are the same as for the previous cycle.
5. In the previous admission cycle, IIMA increased the CAT cut-offs very high. Yet, the number of shortlist remained the same. It is no longer sufficient to just meet the minimum CAT percentile requirement.

IIMA's selection focuses on the quality of the whole profile, not just the CAT score. A candidate with 99 percentile may not get a call, while a candidate with a lower percentile but a strong, diverse profile may.

IIM Shortlist Criteria at a Glance: Key Components & Weightage

Below weightages have been taken for the latest cycle. The 2027-29 criteria by IIM Ahmedabad are new ones while most of the other IIMs will be releasing their 2027 policies shortly and IIM Bangalore has declared that there has been no change in CAT cut-off (85 aggregate percentile).

Key Factors That Drive IIM Waitlist Movement

The IIM waitlist dynamics aren’t random — they’re influenced by several real-world factors. Here's what shapes how far the waitlist moves each year:

1. Acceptance Rates

Top-tier IIMs like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta typically have higher offer acceptance rates. This means fewer students drop out — leading to lower waitlist movement, especially in the General and EWS categories.

However, newer and mid-tier IIMs often see a significant waitlist shift as many top-rankers opt for other options.

2. Multiple Offers and Alternative Preferences

With CAT toppers receiving calls from multiple institutes — including FMS Delhi, XLRI, ISB, and global B-schools — not everyone sticks with their IIM offer. Some may prefer:

1. Lower fee structures (like FMS Delhi),
2. Preferred campus location (e.g., Delhi over Kozhikode),
3. Specialized MBA programs.

This triggers waitlist movements in top IIMs, making space for the next-in-line candidates.

3. Category-Wise Movement Trends

Waitlist movement is not uniform across categories. For instance:

1. NC-OBC and SC categories often see moderate to high movement.
2. General category movement is generally lower at top IIMs but high at mid-tier and newer ones.
3. PwD movement can be slower because of fewer applicants and higher acceptance.

Understanding category-specific trends is essential to estimate your chance of conversion.

4. Strategic Withdrawals & Timing

Some candidates delay confirmation to top B-schools abroad or private colleges, only withdrawing at the last minute. This can cause last-round waitlist conversions — often surprising those who had mentally moved on.

So if you’re waitlisted, stay prepared. Last-round calls often go to serious, ready-to-enroll candidates.

2026 Cycle: Main Highlights (Batch 2026-28)

1. The PI shortlists were announced by the IIMs in the first half of January 2026, while the PI process took place from February to March (a few IIMs until April).
2. The shortlist for IIM Ahmedabad came out on 8 January 2026, that for IIM Calcutta on 8 January and for IIM Bangalore on 13 January.
3. Many IIMs discontinued the GD round, while many IIMs did the PI round only.
4. Waitlists were scheduled in July 2026, but IIM Mumbai delayed its announcement. As late as June 2026, no waitlists had been announced by IIM Kashipur, IIM Nagpur and IIM Bodh Gaya.

IIM Bangalore (IIMB)

IIM Bangalore usually releases its PI shortlist within two weeks of the CAT result (13 January 2026 last cycle). The PI-WAT rounds are held in February–March across several cities. For 2027, IIMB has kept the minimum CAT cut-off at 85 percentile (aggregate) and the final-round norms unchanged.

IIM Calcutta (IIMC)

IIM Calcutta released its shortlist on 8 January 2026 and is expected to release the 2027 shortlist in the 1st–2nd week of January 2027. IIMC gives less weightage to CAT cut-offs and more to academics.

Key highlights: PI conducted online, QA sectional cut-off reduced for the General category, and a lower CAT weight (56%) with more weight on academics and diversity.

IIM Lucknow (IIML)

IIML is likely to declare its list of shortlisted candidates for PI-WAT in the second week of January 2027. Candidates should note that IIML has separate shortlists for PGP, PGP-ABM, and PGP-SM, and it is mandatory for candidates to fill the WAT-PI form online to be eligible. The absence of any cell in the shortlist of programmes implies disqualification from that particular programme.

Maximum marks for diversity factors cannot exceed 20 (PGP-ABM only).

IIM Kozhikode (IIMK)

IIM Kozhikode was one of the early institutions to declare their shortlist for the previous year (3 January 2026). Candidates for the year 2027 can anticipate this from the start of January. Shortlisting at IIM Kozhikode is done based on an Aggregate Index Score (AIS). No academic merit is included for higher studies except for Class XII.
