There has been lots of debate on the remark of “70 hours working in a week” by Narayan Murthy. Few people are supporting it and most people are furious with this comment. Working 10 hours a day without taking any leave will destroy the work-life balance. Work-life balance is having the balance of working and rest other things in life like family, friends, events, travel and more. As per a survey, 72% of employees believe it’s crucial to have a better work-life balance. In a corporate culture like India where senior management wants their employees to work for long hours and also on holidays the concept of work-life balance is important.

  1. 34% of women and 26% man always feel burned out in the office. 
  2. Employees are more likely to join a company with fixed timing and a 5-day working policy. 
  3. 48% of employees admitted that they are working for long hours just to earn more money. 
  4. Employees with good work-life balance are 42% more productive than others.

Work-life Balance is a Myth

  1. As per some people, work-life balance is a myth if someone wants to achieve something then they have to grind 24*7.  They argue that people have to give everything to be the best and work-life balance will stop them from focusing on professional development.  
  2. In a corporate culture like India, it takes a lot of work to achieve work-life balance as managers want you to work even after office hours. They will call employees’ offices on weekends and put them under extra workload. 
  3. Professional and personal life run simultaneously, a person needs to give time to the things which are more important so work-life balance sounds illogical.    
  4. Most of the people are working for less than the industry standard salary in India. To meet their requirements a person has to do multiple jobs and end up having no time for other things.    
  5. People have their desire to live a better life and own some materialistic things which leads them to do extra work. In the process of earning more, they forget they have a life outside of the office also.
  6. There has been a big misconception in Indian corporate culture which is if an employee does work for more hours then they are productive.  And that is not a true, productive measure of the ability to complete a task not with the time taken to complete a task.

Importance of Work-Life Balance

  1. Companies and new-age startups are promoting the work-life balance and making workplaces happier and better.  Some CEO suggest employees with better work-life balance are more productive, more positive and creative than others. 
  2. Most of the companies in India have opted for a 5-day working policy which promotes a better work-life balance. 
  3. The introduction of remote work and hybrid work offers flexibility to employees in that they can do their work from anywhere and anytime.
  4. All of us are earning for a better life and if we are not living that life fully then there is no point in earning.  Employees need to understand that earning money is important but more important is having time for their family and themselves.
  5. Better work-life balance leads to better performance,  lower stress, lower absenteeism, high efficiency and high productivity.

Conclusion

Work-life balance is subjective and people have their own opinion on it. For a person who needs money, the only thing he/she needs is work to earn more money. On the other side, a well-paid employee may look for more time with family and friends. So it depends on the situation of a person.  In general work-life balance practices need to be implemented. A person with a good work-life balance is happy, responsible, positive and full of new ideas. It promotes a good work culture among the society. People with good work-life balance love to do work and they do not hide from it. It removes the stress from the mind of a person.
