The format of GMAT is specified by GMAC, whereas CAT 2026 will use the two-hour-three-section format for the Indian exam series.
Common Admission Test (CAT) is the national level entrance test held by IIMs for admission to post graduate management courses. CAT is one of the most significant examinations for candidates aspiring to join an MBA or PGP course in Indian Institutes of Management.
Scores obtained in the CAT exam are accepted by IIMs and several other educational institutes, including selected IIT management schools, FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon and SPJIMR.
Must Know:
Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a globally recognized standardized admission test formulated by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). This test is aimed at assessing the analytical, quantitative and verbal skills necessary for graduate management studies.
GMAT test scores are accepted in more than 2,400 graduate management programs across the globe. These schools are located in such countries as the USA, the UK, Canada, Europe, Singapore and India.
Important to note is the fact that GMAT is not just for courses abroad. There are also several Indian b-schools who accept GMAT scores especially for some short term management courses like the one year programs.

Understanding the exam pattern assists candidates in preparing properly and selecting the exam that suits them.
As per the CAT 2026 exam pattern, the duration of the exam is 120 minutes, with 40 minutes assigned for each section. There is no movement between sections during the exam.
| Section | Number of Questions | Time |
| VARC (Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension) | 24 | 40 minutes |
| DILR (Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning) | 22 | 40 minutes |
| QA (Quantitative Ability) | 22 | 40 minutes |
| Total | 68 | 120 minutes |
CAT is based on multiple choice type questions (MCQs) as well as Type-In-The-Answer (TITA) Questions which are not MCQ based. Typically, if an MCQ answer is wrong, then there is negative marking of one point but for TITA if the answer is wrong, then there is no negative marking.
The GMAT exam currently has three sections, each of which is allotted 45 minutes. The exam consists of 64 questions altogether and takes 2 hours and 15 minutes.
| Part | Number of Questions | Time |
| Quantitative Reasoning | 21 | 45 minutes |
| Verbal Reasoning | 23 | 45 minutes |
| Data Insights | 20 | 45 minutes |
| Total | 64 | 135 minutes |
As opposed to CAT, GMAT is a computer adaptive test: the testing environment changes in accordance with the test-taker’s performance based on its scoring system. Test-takers are free to choose the order of their sections and revise their responses in a section but cannot change more than three answers in a single section.
Key Difference - CAT requires candidates to take the test within a set timeframe for each section, whereas the GMAT features both a timed section format and an adaptive test format.
These tests measure quantitative and verbal abilities. But, there is a difference in terms of the question format.
CAT does not provide an inflexible chapter-wise syllabus for preparation. The list of topics provided below indicates the major areas that are generally covered.
A. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)
• Reading comprehension passages
• Para jumbles
• Para summaries
• Odd sentence out

The aspirants should concentrate on clarity of concept, question-solving, and time management for all three subjects.

It all depends on your academic experience and how well prepared you are.
